My wife Caroline and I, in the early years of our relationship, would often steal away to the Northern California coastal town of Mendocino for long weekends. Those getaways inspired me to write “Mendocino Sunset” in 1991, and this recording was created at Robert Berry’s Soundtek Studios in San Jose in May 1992. My friend Eric Lindquist plays the keyboards, Robert Berry himself came in late in the final session to add the synthesized saxophone lead, and I sing and play guitar. I also programmed the drum track, but I must admit, it was heavily reworked—for the better—by the Soundtek Studios engineer, who also laid down the synthesized bass track. (I sure wish I could remember his name.)
